Yemen is the largest humanitarian crisis in the world, with more than 24 million people – some 80 per cent of the population – in need of humanitarian assistance, including more than 12 million children. Since the conflict escalated in March 2015, the country has become a living hell for the country’s children.

In need of educational assistance: 4.7 million children

Children under 5 suffering severe acute malnutrition: Around 360,000

Over 8 million people are on the brink of starvation

Already one of the poorest countries in the Middle East before the conflict escalated in March 2015, but holds a special place in Islam, having been mentioned in the Qur’an and being one of the earliest territories to accept Islam. The Prophet (saw) said, ‘The best of men are the men of Yemen, belief is Yemeni, and I am Yemeni.’ (Ahmad) It also boasts one of the world’s most stunning natural beauty spots, Suqutra Island – a third of the 800 plant species there are found nowhere else on Earth.

Yemen is now widely seen as the world’s worst man-made humanitarian crisis of our time . Yemen’s social and economic problems range from poverty, unemployment and corruption to inter-tribal and internal military conflict.

Extreme hunger is commonplace and many live in the shadow of starvation. Water is scarce. Basic but essential services have all but broken down. Livelihoods lie in ruins and children are growing up without access to formal education.
